OB/GYN Medical Assistant Certification

What is OB/GYN?

OB/GYN actually stands for Obstetrics and Gynecology. Obstetrics concerns the surgical care and treatment of women during pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal while Gynecology focuses on women and the medical care of their reproductive system. The vast majority of physicians in this area are OB/GYNs, covering both specialties.

What are some of the services OB/GYNs provide?

OB/GYNs do annual reproductive health exams that include check-ups, pap smears, and mammograms to monitor for reproductive diseases and disorders. These include: cancer, incontinence, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, infertility, menorrhagia, prolapse of pelvic organs, fungal, bacterial or protozoal infections. In addition, on the obstetrics side, they treat pregnant women from the early stages of pregnancy through delivery with monthly check-ups where both the health of the mother and child are monitored with ultrasounds, lab work and other testing. OB/GYNs perform a variety of surgical procedures as well, from hysterectomy and laparoscopy to vaginal and caesarean deliveries.
