Create Positive Memories for Children as a Medical Assistant in Pediatrics

By SCMA On 04/05/2017

To effectively help pediatricians, pediatric medical assistants need to create positive experiences for their young patients.

Do you have a memory of when you visited the doctor as a child? Did you enjoy getting weighed or testing out the blood pressure cuff? Or maybe you had a bad experience at the doctor office. In most cases, you had a pediatric medical assistant to make you comfortable during your visit. Becoming a Specialty Certified Medical Assistant – Pediatric, you will be able to help your young patients have a positive experience when they visit the doctor's office. Some things to think about:

Be Patient

Visits to a doctor's office can be frightening to some. Some children fear the unknown, pain, separation from their parent. The Pediatric Medical Assistant (PMA) is the first point of contact to the little ones in the office. Patience can help in molding these kids to have a pleasant experience. Children will watch how you behave and follow your lead. Do your best to remain calm, pleasant and relaxed so the child knows it's okay to be there.

Create Distractions

This is just like parenting. Kids are easily distracted and the PMA needs to master the art of distracting the kids. You need to be welcoming to children and make being in your office as enjoyable as possible. To create lifelong loyal patients, you must first make them feel comfortable. Create a welcoming environment for kids of all ages.

Make it Fun

A pediatrician and the PMA have to make the doctor's office look and feel non-threatening. Along with the clinical skills, a PMA needs to be able to entertain these tiny tots so that they are not scared of revisiting the office in the future. 8 ways to make your office fun.

Update Clinical Knowledge

Needless to say, this is the prerequisite for a pediatric specialist. Pediatric medical assistants help pediatricians by handling administrative and clinical duties in the office, along with performing preparatory procedures on patients or assisting with examinations. Education for this program is a mixture of on-the-job training and either completion of an associate's degree or certificate program in medical assisting.

The biggest reward to a PMA is a five year old leaving the doctor's office happy, comfortable and with a positive memory. In the end, pediatrics is not just about the expertise in the field, it is also about understanding these little patients and putting them in their comfort zone throughout the visit. If you have that extra knack with children, a specialty in Pediatric Medical Assistant certification is for you. Learn more about SCMA – Pediatrics.
